Questions

Which trips count as business mileage?

Trips you make for work in your own vehicle: to customers, clients, suppliers, other sites, training or a temporary workplace. The normal trip from home to your permanent workplace (commuting) usually does not count. Log only the business part of a trip: if you stop at the shops on the way back, leave out the extra miles.

How does the HMRC 45p and 25p split work?

HMRC allows 45p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles in the tax year (6 April to 5 April) and 25p for every mile after that, for cars and vans together. The app adds your trips up in date order. The trip that passes 10,000 miles is split: for example 30 miles at 45p and 18 miles at 25p. On 6 April the count starts again at 0. A business passenger adds 5p a mile each. Motorcycles are 24p and bicycles 20p, with no limit.

Which IRS and CRA rates does it use?

IRS business rate: 65.5 cents a mile in 2023, 67 cents in 2024, 70 cents in 2025, and in 2026 72.5 cents up to 30 June and 76 cents from 1 July (the IRS raised it mid-year because of fuel prices). Each trip uses the rate for its date. CRA allowance rate: 73 cents a km for the first 5,000 km in 2026 and 67 cents after (72 and 66 cents in 2025, 70 and 64 in 2024). In the territories it is 4 cents more: choose "My employer's or my own rate" and type it. If a rate changes again, choose your own rate and pick "Only trips from a date".

My employer pays a different rate, or I live elsewhere.

Choose "My employer's or my own rate" for the vehicle. Type the rate per mile or km (like 0.45, 45p or 30), and if it drops after a number of miles a year, the lower rate too. Pick the day your tax or claim year starts: 1 Jan, 6 Apr, 1 Apr, 1 Jul or 1 Oct. When the rate changes, edit the vehicle, type the new rate and choose "Only trips from" a date, so older trips keep the old rate.

Why can a trip's amount change after I add another trip?

Only when there is a yearly limit (like HMRC's 10,000 miles). If you add a trip with an earlier date, it comes first in the year, so the trip that crosses the limit can change. The total for the year stays right.

How is the total rounded?

Each trip's amount is worked out exactly and the total is rounded to the cent or penny once, the same as distance times rate. A trip's amount on its own is rounded for display, so adding up the rounded trips by hand can differ by a penny.

What should I keep for the tax office?

HMRC and the IRS want a record made at the time, with the date, where you went, why, and how far. Add each trip on the day, then use "Save spreadsheet (CSV)" or "Print" for your records, and "Save a backup file" now and then in case the phone is lost.

Is it private? Does it work offline?

Your trips stay in this browser on this device: no account, and your data is never sent anywhere. Once loaded, the app works with no connection. This app is a record-keeping tool, not tax advice: check the current rate with your tax office or employer.
