Questions

How many hours does a learner need?

It depends on where you live and your age. New South Wales and Victoria: 120 hours with 20 at night (under 25 in NSW, under 21 in Victoria). Queensland and the ACT: 100 hours with 10 at night (under 25). South Australia: 75 with 15 at night. Tasmania: 80 with 15 at night. Western Australia: 50 with 5 at night. In the US most states ask for 50 hours with 10 at night (California, Florida and many more), New York 50 with 15 at night, Pennsylvania 65 with 10 at night and 5 in bad weather, Texas 30 with 10 at night. The UK, Ireland, New Zealand and many countries have no minimum: set your own goal. Rules change, so check with your licensing office; you can always type your own numbers.

How is night driving worked out?

Most rules count night as sunset to sunrise. The app works out sunset and sunrise for your town on the date of each drive and counts the minutes of the drive that fall in the dark. A drive from 18:45 to 20:00 in Sydney on 31 October is 1 h 15 min, of which 39 min are at night because the sun sets at 19:21. A drive past midnight is counted into the next morning. If your rule uses fixed hours (for example 9 pm to 5 am), choose "Fixed hours" instead. You can also type the night minutes of any drive yourself.

Do lessons with a driving instructor count extra?

In New South Wales, Queensland and the ACT each hour of a lesson with a licensed instructor counts as 3 hours in the logbook, up to 30 logbook hours (10 hours of lessons). In Tasmania each hour counts as 2, up to 20 logbook hours. Tick "Lesson with a driving instructor" on the drive and the app adds the bonus. In New South Wales lesson time counts towards the total but not towards the 20 night hours, so the app leaves it out of the night count there.

I already have hours in a paper logbook.

Tap "Change the hours, night time or name" and use "+ Hours already logged before". Type the total hours and night hours from the paper logbook; they are added to the totals, and new drives are added on top.

Does this replace the official logbook?

Not everywhere. Some places want their own paper logbook or app with the supervisor's signature or licence number. Use this page to log drives on the day and plan the rest, then copy each drive across, or use "Print logbook" or "Save logbook (CSV)" where a printed record is accepted. Never log hours that were not driven.

How is "about 7 weeks at your pace" worked out?

The app adds up the driving time of the last 4 weeks and divides by 4 to get your hours a week. If there were no drives in the last 4 weeks it uses the average since the first drive. It then divides the time still to go (whichever is the most: total, night or bad weather, since night and bad weather hours are part of the total) by that pace.

Is it private? Does it work offline?

Everything stays in this browser on this device: no account, and your data is never sent anywhere. "Use my phone's location" is only used to work out sunset and sunrise and is never sent anywhere either. Once loaded, the app works with no connection.
